Teaching
South Point - Utah State Prison
While teaching at South Jordan Middle School, I had the opportunity to start teaching night classes as South Point located at the Utah State Prison. South Point was an anti recitivism program run by Jordan School District. The objective was to help inmates learn skills that would help them stay out of prison once they were released.
While teaching there, I taught courses in:
- goal setting using Steven R Covey's 7 Habit for Highly Effective People.
- Computer Literacy
- Word Processing
- Excel
- U.S. History
- Geography
- Keyboarding
After a while, I began to feel like a hypocrit. After teaching there for 10 years, I saw 1 student get out and stay out. Prisoners were manipulative and constantly trying to work the system. Few did their assignments and those that were done, were seldom quality work. The GED courses that I taught were usually taught to "students" who felt that simply showing up was all that was needed.
I finally quit because I didn't see it going anywhere and I was tired of wasting my time.
